What is Pokemon?

Well being such a huge Pokemon fan, it is easy to forget than some people may not know what exactly Pokemon is. So this page will give a quick summary of what Pokemon actually is.

Pokemon started life under the name of 'Pocket Monsters' as it was orginally named in Japan, but later renamed to Pokemon for the worldwide market. It began life in the forms of the games Pokemon / Pocket Monsters Red, Blue and Green, and was later made into an Anime and Manga as well as several other things.

What is a Pokemon?

Pokemon is based in a sort of alternate world, mostly the same as the our world but rather than animals, they have Pokemon, but it goes a bit further than that. Pokemon roam the wild like animals do, but in the Pokemon world can be captured by Pokemon trainers using a ball shaped device known as a Pokeball.

Pokemon Trainers

In the Pokemon world at the age of 10, a child is allowed to go on a Pokemon journey to become a Pokemon trainer. A Pokemon trainer travels the world capturing Pokemon, in order to compete in Pokemon battles, beat the eight gym leaders and enter the Pokemon League.

Pokemon Battles and the Pokemon League

Pokemon are not like normal animals, each Pokemon has a type such as Water, Fire or Electric, and can learn a variety of moves which are used to defeat other trainers Pokemon in Pokemon Battles.

For Example:
The Pokemon mascot Pikachu is an electric type Pokemon, its classic move is thunderbolt which is an electric type move.

A Pokemon battle is where two or more Pokemon fight using there moves to damage the opposing Pokemon, causing it to faint and therefore winning the battle.

There are many aspects to battling such as type advantage, for example a water move like water gun will do double damage to a fire type (this is known as being super effective).


The gym leaders are powerful pokemon trainers who are located all over the Pokemon World, they defend their own gym, which is always based on a certain type. For example the first gym leader seen is Brock who runs a Rock type gym, and therefore uses a team of Pokemon purely of the Rock type.
When defeated by a trainer they give them a gym badge, and a traveling Pokemon trainer must obtain eight of these badges to enter the Pokemon League.

The Pokemon League is made up of the four most Powerful trainers in the Pokemon World, and once a trainer beats all four, will be concidered the Pokemon Champion, and concidered the worlds best Pokemon Trainer.


So simple put Pokemon is a world with creatures called Pokemon / Pocket Monsters which are captured by trainers to compete in Pokemon battles. Where everyone competes to become the best trainer.


There are many other things in the Pokemon world, not just trainers, these include Pokemon Coordinators, which have their Pokemon compete in contest to show there beauty and elegance rather than pure power.
